Shed Paint

Choosing the right fence paint

Shed stain and shed paint are both used to protect wood and as a shed and fence preserver. It is a treatment that helps prevent rotting and extends the lifespan of these wooden structures. Wooden shed stain is easier to apply. Plus, some people prefer the look of stain. That said, shed paint comes in more colours and is easier to clean – dust, dirt and debris is less likely to stick to paint. What's more, paint also tends to last longer than solid stain and provides better protection from sun damage.

Does painting a fence make it last longer?

Yes, painting a shed generally makes it last longer, especially ones that haven't been pressure treated during manufacturing. Painting creates a protective barrier against the elements, preventing rot, decay, and other damage caused by rain, UV rays, and sunlight. Regular maintenance and repainting will help keep the shed in good condition and extend its lifespan.

How do I make the garden shed look nice?

To make a garden shed look nice, consider adding plants, paint, or decorative elements. You can also use a shed to showcase your garden's beauty by adding climbing plants or hanging planters. Choosing the right colour for your shed can also help to blend it into the surrounding garden or create a more vibrant focal point.

What shed paints are available?

First of all we need to determine whether you intend to spray or paint your fence. Spraying is the quickest and easiest way to paint a fence, and the spray gun method is exponentially faster than using a paint brush. It also gives you an even finish, so you can apply the paint with a great finish in next to no time. Shed stain can be applied with either traditional tools or with a dedicated sprayer, and is available in a small array of colours. It is mostly aimed at the cheaper end of the market and is therefore targeted at the garden shed end of the spectrum. Due to popular demand, we offer a mid range, sprayable wood paint product that is specifically designed to paint the garden shed at a low level cost.

Garden Room Painting

If your building is a cut above the garden fence then you may be looking at the next level of wood satins and paints. As a multi-surface paint, Royal Exterior is perfect for summer houses, garden rooms and home offices, as it resists cracking, peeling and flaking. This product is also self-priming and works as an undercoat so you can also save on buying an additional primer. Soft greys, greens and blues are always popular options that mix well with the natural colours of the garden. They look particularly good in winter when a burst of colour is always welcome

Wooden Garages & Workrooms

What kind of paint should you use in an unheated garage? Water-based acrylic  paint such as Royal Exterior is best for an unheated garage because it resists cracking due to temperature and humidity fluctuations that an unheated garage is exposed to. Garages that are clad with feather edge boarding will be easier to spray rather than brush, so we would recommend a couple of coats of the Woodstain and Protect as this is sprayable. Both products are available in a clear, which is preferable to many, especially on brand new buildings that haven't mellowed in the sun.

Tips for painting the garden shed

If you're painting an old shed, you'll need to sand it to remove old and flaky paint. Wrap some sandpaper around a block and start sanding in the direction of the woodgrain to ensure you cover every bit of your shed and remove all the old paint. Treating your shed is essential if you want it to last a long time.

If you want it to blend in with your landscaping and yard, it's best to choose neutral colors like shades of brown and grey. If you like nature-inspired colours, try hues of green, yellow, or orange. If you love a traditional feel, look for blues and whites to match the colours of your shed to the colours of your home might be better.

When to use stain:

  • If you want to preserve the natural wood grain and appearance.

  • If you prioritize low maintenance and longer lasting protection.

Shed Paint Questions

01

Is it OK to paint without sanding?

Brand new garden sheds can usually be painted onto without the need for sanding unless they have an oil based preservative coating already applied.
Older buildings that have previously been painted will need a light sanding to remove flaking paint and allow the new paint to adhere to.

02

What time of year should you paint shed?

Painting a shed needs a dry day and decent paint. Spring and summer are both great times of the year to crack the paint out. Just make sure there's no rain forecasted for a good few days. The wood itself also needs to be completely dry before you can paint over the top

03

Should you prime a shed before painting?

One question we hear a lot is “do I need to prime my shed before painting?” Well, you don't have to prime it, especially if you use Protek Paint – and there are two main reasons for this: Firstly, Royal Exterior and Woodstain & Protect have both been specifically designed to apply direct to wood without the need for a primer. Secondly, because they are water based products, they make it easier to create a more even finish, even on untreated wood.
