Choosing the right fence paint

For your common or garden wooden fence, the best paint for fences is royal exterior wood paint. This is one of our most versatile paint products, perfect for use on sheds, doors, wooden furniture, and, of course, fences.

Light-colored fence paint, like white, off-white, or light grey, can make a garden look bigger by reflecting light and creating a sense of openness. These colors help to visually expand the space and make the garden feel brighter and more airy.

Here's why lighter colors work: Light Reflection: Light colors reflect more sunlight, making the garden appear brighter and more spacious.  Openness: Light colors create a feeling of openness, blurring the boundaries of the garden and making it feel larger.  Complementary: Light colors act as a neutral backdrop, allowing the colors of plants and flowers to stand out and make the garden feel more vibrant.  While darker colors can also be used, they may make a small garden feel more enclosed. However, dark colors like deep greens or blues can be effective in larger gardens by blending with the foliage and creating a sense of depth.  Ultimately, the best color choice depends on the specific garden's size, light conditions, and desired aesthetic.

Does painting a fence make it last longer?

Yes, painting a fence generally makes it last longer, especially wooden fences. Painting creates a protective barrier against the elements, preventing rot, decay, and other damage caused by rain, UV rays, and sunlight. Regular maintenance and repainting will help keep the fence in good condition and extend its lifespan.

How do I make the garden fence look nice?

To make a garden fence look nice, consider adding plants, paint, or decorative elements. You can also use a fence to showcase your garden's beauty by adding climbing plants or hanging planters. Choosing the right colour for your fence can also help to blend it into the surrounding garden or create a more vibrant focal point.

What fence paints are available?

First of all we need to determine whether you intend to spray or paint your fence. Spraying is the quickest and easiest way to paint a fence, and the spray gun method is exponentially faster than using a paint brush. It also gives you an even finish, so you can apply the paint with a great finish in next to no time. Not all fence paints are suitable for spraying however. Water based paints obviously are depending on their consistency. Products that are suitable are Woodstain & Protect, Shed & Fence and Timber Eco Shield.

Basic Fence Paint

Use Shed and Fence paint for quick application either by sprayer or brush.

Fence Paints v's Wood Stains

When choosing between fence paint and wood stain, stain is generally considered the better option for a fence as it penetrates deeper into the wood, providing better long-term protection, requiring less maintenance, and allowing the natural wood grain to show through, while paint sits on the surface, may peel over time, and can hide the wood's natural beauty; however, paint offers more color options and might be a better choice if you want a dramatic color change and don't mind more frequent reapplication.

Key differences:

Penetration:

Appearance:

Stain absorbs into the wood, while paint sits on the surface.

Stain allows the natural wood grain to show through, while paint completely covers it.

Maintenance:

Durability:

Stain generally requires less frequent reapplication compared to paint.

Both can be durable if properly applied, but stain is often considered more resistant to peeling and cracking.

When to use stain:

  • If you want to preserve the natural wood grain and appearance.

  • If you prioritize low maintenance and longer lasting protection.

When to use paint:

  • If you want a solid, opaque color with a wide range of options.

  • If you are okay with more frequent maintenance to touch up peeling areas.

Fence Paint Colours

Here are some ideas for decorating your fence: Plant Life: Climbing plants, hedges, or even just hanging baskets can add a lot of character to a fence. Consider using a trellis for climbing plants or a vertical garden for a unique, space-saving touch. Paint and Colour: A simple coat of paint can make a fence look much more presentable. Consider using light colours to make a small garden feel larger or darker colours for a more modern look. Decorative Elements: Add mirrors, shelves, or even outdoor art to add a personal touch. Consider using decorative panels or screen panels to divide your garden or add privacy. Layering: Layering vegetation in front of a fence can help it blend in with the rest of the garden. Consider the overall style: Think about the overall style of your garden and choose a fence and decorations that complement it. Maintenance: Regularly maintain your fence by painting, staining, or cleaning it to ensure it looks its best.
